Frank G. Phillips, Founder Frank Phillips grew up on the family farm and started hauling gravel in the 1920's. The depression of 1929 caused most people to start over in their lives, and Frank was no exception. He lost his trucks and started over, working the family farm, delivering milk, and hauling gravel to provide for his family. By 1942 he had worked his way back and started his own gravel pit at what is now known as Walnut Grove Country Club. In the mid 1940's, Don and Dick Phillips joined their father in the business after returning from service during World War II. In 1948 the company began operations from Shakertown Road in Beavercreek Township. They grew the business slowly, catering to the home owner, home builder and the small developer. Phillips Sand & Gravel moved in 1955 to U.S. Route 35 and Orchard Lane, the site of a barrow pit for the construction of the Route 35 highway. They continued to grow the business through a steady increase in products and services, adding a Ready Mix plant in 1960. Also in 1960, Phillips bought 13 acres in Xenia as a gravel source. Frank's third son, George, joined the company in 1961 after graduating from college. The Phillips family understood the value of their employees from the beginning. Benefits have always been available to the employees of the company as they were to Phillips family members. The Phillips Profit Sharing Plan was introduced in 1962 and still continues today. This plan has allowed all the Phillips Companies employees to participate in the rewards of the companies they sustain. In 1992, Phillips Companies had an open house celebrating 50 years of business after moving into their new office on the new concrete Phillips Drive adjacent to the U.S. Route 35 site. Don & Dick also retired in 1992, providing an important precedence of passing on the business to the next generation.

The following is a letter from our President to our customers:
Dear Friends: We wish to thank all of our customers, family, staff, and friends for the support and advice that has guided our progress. We have seen many changes over the years reflecting the needs of our customers and the communities we serve. Our focus will continue to be quality products and excellent service. Your comments can help us with this goal.
Surveys will be sent out from time to time to help us in serving our customers and the public. I realize the sacrifice of time these surveys cause and I appreciate any help you can give us. The past years have seen major additions to our products and services based on the results of surveys and requests of our customers. Anytime you see something we could do better, faster, or more efficient, please feel free to contact us. We will continually strive to improve and grow our products and services for our customers.
Sincerely,
Richard L. Phillips, II, President |
